About Lake Martin Swamp Tours

lakemartinHi, I am Marcus de la Houssaye,¬†owner and operator of de la Houssaye’s Swamp Tours for over 25 years.

I am the man, in a flat-bottomed aluminum commercial fishing boat who pioneered the smaller and more personal Louisiana swamp tours that have come to be the most popular tourist attractions in the state of Louisiana today.

I am not the only one who is doing this today, but I was the first to do it commercially in a fishing boat, and a large part of what made my tours special was the boat enabled me to reach pristine wildlife intensive locations where other boats could not go.

In all the places I have used as tour locations, Lake Martin stands out as clean, quiet, easily accessed from I-10, secure parking lot, relativly stable water level, and certainly it is the all time most intensive wildlife experince I have ever found in the wild.

In short; Lake Martin is the best.

My Background

flight1I began doing my Louisiana Swamp Tours into America’s largest river basin swamp, the Atchafalya Basin, in 1983, as an amateur guide for my photographer friends. Then in 1985, I was mostly a passenger on my first official professional Atchafalaya swamp tour and it was co-guided by my good friend and inspiration, Louis Choplin. We went into the interior of the swamp in his small commericial fishing boat to the places that he knew so well as a fisherman. What Louis did for us that day was so perfect, that is how I am still doing it today.

What To Expect

flight3If you are seeking adventure, education, entertainment and the opportunity to experience the exotic nature of Cajun country up close and personal, consider that my boat was designed to reach the shallow, densely vegetated interior of the swamp in the Atchafalaya Basin, where we harvest crawfish in the wild. In the same boat, now outfitted with comfortable padded seats with back rests, we can get off the lake, away from boat traffic and into the Bald Cypress swamp surrounding Lake Martin, where wildlife is abundant and undisturbed.

The tour departure schedule will be different in the winter time than the schedule we set in the heat of summer. This is relative to the seasonal climate changes south Louisiana is famous for.

Please be advised; if you are traveling west through Cajun country on Interstate 10, Lafayette is your last chance to exit Interstate 10 and do a Louisiana swamp tour before reaching the Texas state line.
